Sunderland 1-1 Manchester City: Johnson late brilliant strike

afp
Manchester City midfielder Adam Johnson scored a brilliant goal during injury time that made his team can force a 1-1 draw with the results of Sunderland, the Premier League duel, at the Stadium of Light on Sunday (14.3.2010). City is now in fifth position with 50 points, or lose two points from Tottenham in second place.

The results were a relief given the City's performance appear below. In addition to slow, they are also less creative and persistent attack in the struggle for the ball. The flow was often cut bait in the middle of the road or even thrown out of court.

Sunderland seem to closely look at the situation. Because, after a stop in the middle of the City, they launched a quick attack, which resulted goals from Kenwyne Jones's head in the ninth minute. Utilizing Steed Malbranque cross, Jones gore ball from the middle of the penalty box to the upper right corner of goalkeeper Shay Given.

Nor abandonment makes City heat. They still can not find the rhythm and style of the game right. The result, although still able to keep Sunderland midfield, they were not able to create a dangerous threat to the goalkeeper Craig Gordon.

Weak power struggle almost to the disaster brought City their second goal, following a counterattack Sunderland at minute 23. Fortunately, the execution Jones still deviating from the target.

Entering the 29th minute, City began to find their game. They even just need one minute to make a threat to the Sunderland goal, with Gareth Barry. Fortunately for Gordon, Barry missed kick and off the court.

In the midst of rising business, City actually got the injury problems the defender Wayne Bridge in 32 minutes. Coach Roberto Mancini was forced to pull it and put Santa Cruz.

Cruz did not jack up the entry of the game City. Instead, they regress and play like in the early minutes. This performance decline Sunderland responded by increasing aggressiveness. Every time the ball, they immediately launched an attack.

Indeed, poor coordination of front-line hard to make their efforts futile. However, at least, they can prevent the City to develop the game, and maintain 1-0 advantage until halftime whistle.

Entering the second half, City trying to improve the appearance. With the game ball to the feet and legs faster tempo, they succeeded in draining attacks and the threat to the Sunderland goal.

At 51 minutes, City had three golden opportunities through Santa Cruz, Shaun Wright-Phillips (SWP), and Craig Bellamy. Unfortunately, none made it into the goal Gordon.

Sunderland have not given a dangerous attack, when the City re-create opportunities equalized through Carlos Tevez in the 70th minute. Utilizing feedback Bellamy, Tevez fired the shot, which again ended in the hands of Gordon.

Ten minutes later, Bellamy returned equalize opportunities. Having mastered the bait Tevez, Bellamy dribbling into the penalty box. Once past the defender Alan Hutton, he was confronted with Gordon and shoot the ball, which unfortunately leads straight to Gordon.

Continually failed, the City did not give up. With the game still maintaining tension, they continue to spread the attack. Utilizing wild ball in the penalty box opponents, Johnson kicked off the nest in the upper left corner of the Sunderland goal.

Stoke City 3-1 Manchester City: Adebayor sent-off

goal.com
Stoke City needed 120 minutes to see off Manchester City in a tough match at the Britannia Stadium, but extra time goals from Ryan Shawcross and Tuncay secured their passage after Emmanuel Adebayor was sent off for the visitors.

Neither side managed to break the deadlock during a first half that swung both ways. City came strong out of the blocks and put the Stoke defence under concerted pressure. This led Thomas Sorensen to have to make saves from both Emmanuel Adebayor and Gareth Barry, while Nedum Onuoha shot wide of the target as Roberto Mancini's side took control early on.

Craig Bellamy wasted the best opportunity of the half with 20 minutes gone when a quick break almost the full length of the pitch from City saw Adebayor run through, he set up the Welshman only for his first touch to let him down and Sorensen rushed out to make a block.

City had most of the possession for the first half hour however Stoke started to come into the game, but not before both their forwards in Madamy Sidibe and Ricardo Fuller were shown yellow cards. Rory Delap warmed his throwing arm up for a number of occasions and City struggled to clear the balls flying into the box – while the man himself had a header easily saved by Shay Given on 37 minutes.

Both teams came out with more determination for the second half, however they cancelled each other out and the two managers started making their substitutions to change the game.

Barry missed a great chance for City on 67 minutes when he headed over a cross from substitute Shaun Wright-Philips from close range before two of Tony Pulis's fresh introductions made the breakthrough.

On 77 minutes Dave Kitson played a one-two with fellow substitute Tuncay on the edge of the area and then coolly slotted past Given to give Stoke the lead, an advantage which lasted only 90 seconds however before Adebayor cushioned the ball down for Bellamy to smack the ball in for an equaliser.

Delight soon turned to anguish for Adebayor though as on 81 minutes though, as he swung an arm at Ryan Shawcross and was given a red card by Steve Bennett.

In the second minute of injury time Stoke could have won the game but Shawcross headed a corner just wide of the post and then Fuller dragged a shot off target as the clock headed towards extra time.

Stoke took the lead again with 95 minutes of the tie gone, with the goal coming from one of Delap's infamous long throws. Given came for the ball but was beaten to it by Shawcross on the near post and the Stoke captain diverted the ball into an empty net to give his side a deserved lead.

That lead was extended and the game virtually over three minutes later when Stoke broke quickly and Tuncay turned the defence inside out before slotting the ball home for 3-1 and confirm his side a trip to Chelsea in the next round.

Manchester City 2-0 Portsmouth: Adebayor great finish

espnstar.com
Emmanuel Adebayor acknowledged the heavens in remembrance after scoring for the first time since the gun attack in Angola.

Three members of the Togo backroom staff were killed in the terrorist atrocity that resulted in Adebayor and his team-mates pulling out of the African Nations Cup.

There was no joyous celebration as Adebayor rattled his 40th-minute effort past David James.

But as City returned for the second half, the former Arsenal star looked quietly but pointedly to the sky in honour of his fallen colleagues.

By then, Vincent Kompany had powered home a header from Martin Petrov's corner to ensure the Blues moved to within a point of fourth spot despite a less than convincing performance that was still enough to overcome crisis club Portsmouth, who tried hard enough but were too limited to have any impact.

Although Grant has pledged to remain as manager, there is little to be gained from his job at present other that personal pride.

The sale of Younes Kaboul without his knowledge was a lamentable indictment on the state of a club desperately trying to raise money just to pay the wages this month.

It is a shoddy way for any professional club to treat its staff, let alone one who, for now, remain part of the self-styled best league in the world.

Grant was only able to name a full set of substitutes because Quincy Owusu-Abeye signed on loan and the loss of skipper Hermann Hreidarsson to injury during the first half could cause a problem if reinforcements are not brought in before tomorrow's 5pm transfer deadline.

It was to Grant's credit that Pompey were the better side for 39 minutes.

Taking advantage of City's unusual lethargy, the visitors carved out two fine chances.

John Utaka, one of the few survivors from that 2008 FA Cup final win, was presented with the first but leaned back too far when he got on the end of Danny Webber's cross and scooped his shot over.

Webber and Utaka were also heavily involved in the move that ended with Kompany deflecting Anthony Vanden Borre's shot onto his own bar.

Stephen Ireland may only be a slight figure. But he had the strength to hold off Webber and stop the former Watford man tapping Portsmouth in front.

Problems are all relative of course. Yes, it is not nice to see such a proud old club suffering an implosion that seems destined to end in administration.

But, compared to what Adebayor has been through, it really is irrelevant.

The last act of Togo's African Nations Cup was to be banned for two tournaments yesterday.

Given their recent experience, they are probably quite glad even if the decision itself is almost impossible to comprehend.

Anyone with an ounce of compassion could have understood what was going through Adebayor's mind after he crashed his 40th-minute shot past David James.

Latching onto Ireland's lofted pass, his marker Mark Wilson appealing in vain for offside, Adebayor acted as though he no longer knew how to celebrate, an acknowledgement to the heavens at the start of the second half told its own story.

Kompany effectively wrapped up victory in stoppage time.

At City's previous corner, the Belgian had complained of being impeded by Tal Ben Haim.

Having gained no response from referee Martin Atkinson, Kompany took matters into his own hands, simply shrugging the Israeli aside as they ran to meet Martin Petrov's corner, before powering home his first goal of the season.

Portsmouth continued to work hard after the break, which, like Grant, is a testament to their professionalism.

Webber might have breathed fresh life into the contest when he tried to turn home the loose ball after Shay Given had saved from Angelos Basinas.

Unfortunately, the striker missed his kick and fell over.

Now Grant lurches on towards deadline day, six points adrift of the survival waterline, having no real idea what players he is going to be left with at 5pm.

Schunthorpe 2-4 Manchester City: Silvinho 30-yards strikes

uk.eurosport.yahoo.com
Martin Petrov's early opener for City was cancelled out by Paul Hayes, before Nedum Onuoha and Sylvinho opened up a two-goal lead for City.

A Dedryk Boyata own goal gave Scunthorpe some hope of at least forcing a replay at Eastlands, but Robinho made sure of a home draw in the fifth round against Stoke City with a goal in the final 10 minutes.

It was Robinho's first goal of the season for City, and possibly his last for the club, if reports that he recently revealed his impending departure prove to have any foundation.

After Arsenal's exit at the hands of Stoke earlier on Sunday, Scunthorpe must have held out hopes that they too could cause an upset, especially with several first-team City players rested due to their Carling Cup semi-final second leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

However, they found themselves behind after just three minutes when Petrov scored his fifth goal of the season.

Robinho found Petrov on the left, and the Bulgarian powered past Garry Thompson and fired a strike into the near top corner.

Unperturbed, Scunthorpe played their way into the game and almost levelled on the quarter-hour mark. Grant McCann's corner was met by Cliff Byrne's well-timed run, but the Irish defender saw his header canon off the underside of the bar. City half-cleared the ball but another ball came in over the top and Hayes stretched to send his effort wide.

Hayes made up for that miss with half an hour gone after City once again failed to fully clear their lines from a corner. After repelling several balls into the box another dropped perfectly for Hayes to blast a volley into the top corner to equalise. The striker was in an offside position when the ball came in, but the flag stayed down and the goal stood.

City regained the lead just before half time when Stephen Ireland marked his return from injury by lifting a weighted ball over the defence and Onuoha was on hand to fire past Scunthorpe goalkeeper Joe Murphy.

City manager Roberto Mancini brought on young Irishman Greg Cunningham at half time for his debut at left-back, and moved veteran full-back Sylvinho into midfield. Less than a quarter of an hour later the Brazilian scored his first goal in almost four years when he fired a fearsome dipping strike from 30 yards out that had Murphy beaten at full stretch.

Scunthorpe's hopes were again raised with 20 minutes remaining when Cliff Byrne turned a long throw from Sam Togwell towards goal and Boyata instinctively stuck a leg out and steered the shot past goalkeeper Stuart Taylor.

Nigel Akins's side were spurred on by thoughts of a Premier League scalp against the club that beat them 5-1 in the Carling Cup earlier in the season, and City had to weather a storm before they finally put the tie to rest with a well-crafted goal.

Sylvinho fed Petrov on the edge of the box and the winger played a first-time ball into the path of Robinho, who lifted a classy finish over Murphy and ran towards the travelling City fans and embraced them in celebration.

Whether that gesture turns out to be a parting shot to the fans should become clear before the end of the month.
