Bayern were staring at a second consecutive setback when Alexander Meier latched on to a Patrick Ochs with an hour played and finished confidently. The hosts needed merely nine minutes to restore parity, however, as substitute Arjen Robben buried a loose ball from close range, but the match seemed headed for a draw when Van Gaal withdrew striker Luca Toni for defender Martín Demichelis with four minutes remaining. The Dutch trainer sent Van Buyten forward to join the attack at that point and it proved an inspired decision, the Belgian defender heading in from Thomas Müller's flick in the 88th minute.
