AS Roma 3-0 Genoa: Toni impressive

Roma coach Claudio Ranieri hailed Luca Toni after the forward scored twice against Genoa to open his account in Serie A.

The Giallorossi won 3-0, with Toni delivering his first goals in Roma colours.

Ranieri said: "We needed a player like Toni. He is strong with his head and he is always present in the area.

"He scored twice and came close to scoring a few more goals."

The outcome at the Stadio Olimpico marked Roma's third win in four games and extended the Giallorossi's unbeaten run to 10 matches.

More importantly, the result allowed Roma to leapfrog Ranieri's former side Juventus into third after the Turin giants lost 1-0 at Chievo.

Ranieri, who replaced Luciano Spalletti at the helm of the Giallorossi back in October with the team on zero points, admitted he could not have predicted such a recovery from his side.

He said: "If anyone would have told me at the time that we would be in this position right now, I would not have believed it.

"But we haven't done anything yet, the season is long.

"We are in a good run of form and we must continue like this, remaining humble because when you think you have arrived that is when you begin to fall."

Genoa coach Gian Piero Gasperini praised red-hot Roma as his team suffered their fourth consecutive defeat on the road this season in the Eternal City.

The Grifoni had only one shot on goal in the entire game as the hosts dominated from start to finish.

Gasperini said: "We found a Roma side in great condition and they were superior to us in every aspect today.

"Unfortunately, my team is struggling when playing away from home and this is something we need to study in order to change this trend."

The result dropped Genoa to 12th in the standings.
